The occupiers took away his leg, but not a sense of dignity: the story of Artem Malinsky, who with his family survived the occupation of Bucha

The story of Artem Malinsky, who survived the shelling of the occupiers in Bucha, is impressive and fascinating at the same time. It is amazing because after surviving the occupation of the city and losing his leg, he did not lose his sense of self-worth, but is fascinating, because despite everything, the man has a thirst for life and remains an incredible optimist.

This is the story of 23-year-old Artem. Strong, kind, a little proud optimist. That’s what his wife Eugene and three-year-old son Adam think.

Artem’s passion is cooking. And he loves his job on the construction site. To which, unfortunately, will not be able to return. The worst episode of his life took place in Bucha. He and his family that day, like all Ukrainians, woke up from the explosions. But at first he did not attach much importance to it.

“Who needs Bucha? There is nothing important for the enemy. We were sure that we would not feel anything there,” Artem recalls.

And in a few days the occupiers settled in Bucha and managed there like at home. So Artem spent more than a week, with a frightened three-year-old son in his arms and without contact with his mother, who lived in the neighboring village of Vorzeli. So the boy decided to go to his mother on foot. In the yard he saw a murdered relative, whom the boy had to bury himself. It was at that time that the occupiers were passing by in a tank. Enraged, Artem ran out onto the road, blocked the way for the occupiers and cursed at them. And in response, one of the enemy tanks opened fire on Artem. The shell flew nearby, and the fragment hit him in the leg.

For three days, the boy bandaged the boy, but the wound did not heal. In particular, because of diabetes, which Artem has had since childhood. The boy decided he was dying. So he took out his crutches and went home to say goodbye to his friend and son. And when he arrived, he learned that neither his wife nor son was home. They were evacuated. And the next day Artem had a chance to be saved. The first agreed green corridor was to open in Bucha that day. But the white buses did not arrive.

Artem told how he and a neighbor found an abandoned fired bus and decided to ride it. After six enemy checkpoints and finally seeing our Ukrainian flag, Artem shed tears. Finally, Artem was able to see his grandparents in Kyiv. Later, his wife and son returned from Western Ukraine. They consider their rescue from Bucha a great miracle and rejoice that their family is finally together safe.

Artem does not know what he will do next. But despite all the experiences, the family does not lose optimism and it seems that he helps the family to live and dream of a bright future in Ukraine.
