The former German chancellor supported measures of the European Union, the U.S., NATO and the UN to stop a full-scale war. The consequences of hostilities will be significant for Ukrainians, she warned.
Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel in her first public speech in six months condemned the war unleashed by Russia in Ukraine. This was reported by the German edition Zeit Online.
“I stand in solidarity with Ukraine, attacked by Russia, and support its right to self-defense,” Merkel said
The chancellor admitted that she does not want to make any outside assessments on her own time. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Merkel said, is too blatant a violation of international law in the history of Europe since the end of World War II.
The Chancellor supports any measures taken by Germany, other EU countries, the US, NATO, the G7 and the UN to stop “Russia’s barbaric war of aggression”.
